New York Transportation Accident Facts

The deadliest subway accident in New York City history occurred on Nov. 1, 1918, when a subway train lost control and crashed, killing 97 riders and injuring 200 more. On Aug. 28, 1991, five people were killed and more than 200
injured when the Number 4 subway train derailed just north of Union Square. The operator was found to be intoxicated and was sentenced to 15 years in jail.

In 2002, over 80 million people pass through JFK, Newark and LaGuardia airports on over 1 million flights. In 1945 a disoriented pilot crashed a B-25 Bomber into the Empire State Building. In 1960, 2 planes collided over New York City causing debris to rain down on parts of Brooklyn and Staten Island. In November 2001 American Airlines Flight 587 crashed in the Rockaways after its take off from JFK.
