NY Statewide Programs For Pedestrian Safety

In addition to local programs, the following state agencies and programs focus on pedestrian safety.

New York City Department of Transportation:
The "Safe City Program" - is designed to provide school children with traffic safety training

The Pedestrian Safety Program
-- uses education, engineering and enforcement to increase the awareness of pedestrians to the danger sites for them in the city.

New York Coalition for Transportation Safety -- established in 1982, the Coalition develops and conducts traffic safety program initiatives, and plays an advocacy role.
New York State Police -- Information, education and officer training on pedestrian safety.
New York State Department of Health -- The Injury Control and Prevention Program collects accident data on people admitted to hospitals with injuries due to motor vehicle crashes.

New York State Department of Transportation:
In conjunction with the Federal Highway Administration, NYS DOT is sponsoring a statewide effort to increase pedestrian traffic and to make walking a component of the state's intermodal transportation system.

The Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation Program, its managers, Regional Office Program Coordinators, other governmental agency personnel, the Metropolitan Planning Organization's members and other advocates in the not-for-profit and private sectors are striving to increase the number and improve the safety of pedestrians in the state.

In developing their own programs, localities can receive assistance from the Cornell Cooperative Extension, the NYS Association of Traffic Safety Boards as well as the NYS Governor's Traffic Safety Committee. Your local traffic safety boards can also serve as a clearinghouse for ideas, data, experience and knowledge, and to encourage the cooperative efforts in your locality.
